Illumination Painting Instruction

Raquy is passionate about teaching others how to create their own illuminated painting, giving students a window into this traditional art form.

INTRO TO ILLUMINATION PAINTING

Raquy guides you in creating an illuminated painting.

The steps include:

-stain the paper with coffee
-create a traditional design with a pencil on tracing paper
-transfer it to a coffee-stained final card
-fill in the gold, paint the other colors, make the outline, fill in the background

What Raquy's students have to say:

Brandi Mezilka, Asheville, NC

We have had Raquy come and teach darbuka technique quite a few times over the years and it is always a crowd pleaser, but this year she brought a whole new offering -an illumination painting class- and it might be our favorite workshop ever! A room full of boisterous drummers sat so quietly together (though we had fabulous background music), absolutely enthralled in the deepest concentration and celebrating one another’s amazing creations by the end of the day! This artistic tradition was a brand new experience to all the participants and we learned so much in four hours and all now have gorgeous pieces of art to show for it. Thank you to everyone who came out to try something new and support making these things happen. And thank you, Raquy, for inspiring everyone!

So much gratitude to have the opportunity to do an immersive artist residency to study Tezhip, the art of illumination, with friend and teacher Raquy Danziger in Jaffa, Israel. Seeing some ancient Islamic illuminations, witnessing the saturated colors and the fragrance of the sacred, captured my attention many years ago and sparked the longing to know more about these techniques. This art form is so complex... technical, yet, incredibly graceful. The materials are simple, but the possibilities are endlessly fascinating to me. We just got the smallest taste of this work...I know there is much practice ahead to gain any proficiency in this art form. I have many ideas brewing and hope to incorporate this new form into my encaustic paintings sometime soon. Inshallah

Raquy Danziger is a fantastic teacher, her passion and love for her craft makes it hard not to fall in love with illumination painting and her. We enjoyed our time together at the Medrese. Oh… and what a place to learn this beauty art. Just visiting the place alone is magic, and then anchoring the experience with learning a new craft and having fun is fantastic - we can highly recommend Everybody to try - you won’t regret it - you will enjoy it.

Raquy Danziger taught me illumination art. It's painting but she took it for me to another level.Raquy took me and showed me a museum of Illumination art, art school, mosques, and many other places which I would never find by myself - so much beauty and inspiration. I could even visit Raquy's apartment which is full of her paintings! She inspired me deeply with her paintings and lifestyle as well.We had art books while painting so when I felt lost, I could get re-inspired by them or ask Raquy. She was very patient and generous with me so I could finish my first Illumination painting ever - under her good guidance. I enjoyed learning with Raquy in a peaceful place. I'm proud of what I learned and that I can share it further.
